About Thirukkural
Thirukkural (திருக்குறள்) is a classic Tamil literary work consisting of 1330 short couplets, or kurals, written by Thiruvalluvar (திருவள்ளுவர்). Often referred to as the "Universal Veda" or the "Tamil Veda," it offers timeless wisdom on ethics, politics, economics, and love.
The work is divided into three main sections (பால்):
- அறத்துப்பால் (Aram) - Virtue: Chapters 1-38 (Kurals 1-380) covering ethics, righteousness, and moral values
- பொருட்பால் (Porul) - Wealth: Chapters 39-108 (Kurals 381-1080) on statecraft, politics, and economics
- காமத்துப்பால் (Inbam) - Love: Chapters 109-133 (Kurals 1081-1330) on love and relationships
Each section contains multiple Adhikarams (அதிகாரங்கள்/chapters), and each Adhikaram has exactly 10 kurals. The Thirukkural has been translated into over 100 languages, making it one of the most translated works in world literature.
